About
Established in 1997, Olin College was created by the F. W. Olin Foundation. Because the trustees wanted to ensure that Franklin W. Olin's original philanthropic wishes were permanently upheld, Lawrence W. Milas, the foundation's president, suggested founding an educational institution. Milas noted that they naturally leaned toward funding engineering and science colleges due to Mr. Olin's engineering background. He wanted to verify if this aligned with Mr. Olin's past thoughts, so he reviewed old board minutes and discovered that shortly before his passing in the late 1940s, Mr. Olin had indeed mentioned the concept of establishing a brand-new school during several board meetings.
