About
It was in 1949 when Yokohama University was founded as a new-world University, equipped with the Commercial Faculty and the Economic Research Institute. Three years later (in 1952), Yokohama City University incorporated Yokohama Medical School and established the School of Medicine. By establishing an additional faculty - the Literature and Science Faculty - Yokohama City University formulated a three faculty system that year. Science and Literature Faculty was established in order to serve as a bridge between the two faculties: the Commercial Faculty and the School of Medicine, which seem to be difficult to link together. In addition, Yokohama City University has been involved in leading-edge research activities from a global perspective. Kihara Institute for Biological Research, established in 1984 is the center of Plant Genome Science along with the master’s and Doctoral’s program in collaboration with RIKEN. When Yokohama City University was converted into an independent administrative entity, the Business, International Liberal Arts, and Science Faculties merged to form the “International College of Arts and Sciences”.
Yokohama City University ranked 2nd nationally by the Times Higher Education in their Best Small University 2016. The University ranked 460th by QS Global World Rankings, 34th in Japan and 211th in Asian University Rankings according to the data of Top Universities.
